I didn’t go to JPS, so I chose to research how to do zine at home. I went to bookstores and researched a lot of magazines and I think those magazines are more fashionable and more mature for 22-40 years old. I didn’t find any personalised magazines that were entirely aimed at 18-27.I think this vacancy has caused me to think about young fashion. Through my research I found that established magazines such as Vogue, Bazzar use very comfortable typography and the photos are neat and clear. I think they do a perfect job and their high aesthetic is one of the factors that puts them ahead in the industry. But I find that they don’t go for very experimental and highly saturated colour schemes for insurance purposes, which I think is probably related to their targeting. I don’t have to think about that in the magazine I’m working on, and I can be very experimental and bold.
At the beginning when the teacher told us that the theme of the azine was ‘Self ’,I started a mind map, listing all the things that were related to self in me.

After I had listed the elements of SELF, I realised that this is what I think of when I am 20 years old at the moment. If I were a few years older I might change my mind, so I decided on the theme ‘Youth’, which is not only about being young but also about a state of mind. For example, I got a tattoo on my body when I was 17 and I thought it was really cool, even though I don’t like it now and I wanted to get rid of it, but looking back I don’t regret getting it because I liked it at that time. I think that’s what I’m trying to say: “Do what you want to do, take responsibility for yourself and don’t regret it”.
Throughout the second semester I have learnt what a magazine needs to be. I hope to learn creative director in the future so I have chosen to add only a small amount of text to my zine and focus more on the photos and narrowtive. In terms of how to reflect my theme, I think there are a lot of photos in my phone that I can use, which is a reflection of the life of ‘youth’ at my 20 years old.
